No. 3 seed and past champion Maria Sharapova would stand between Madison Keys and a berth in the United States Open semifinals, but you can rest assured the 16-year-old Keys isn't looking anywhere near that far ahead as she readies for next week's debut in a major tennis tournament.
Keys, 16, will face American Jill Craybas, a 37-year-old American who is ranked 111th in the world, in first-round Open play next week at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
While Keys is the youngest player in either the men's or women's singles draws, Craybas will be playing in her 14th Open. She turned pro the year after Keys was born in Rock Island and has advanced four times to the tournament's second round.
Keys played her way into the Open by winning a wildcard playoff among eight of the most highly ragarded young American women last week in College Park, Md. She is ranked 456th in the Women's Tennis Association world rankings.
The teen could face Petra Kvitova, the No. 5 seed in the 128-player women's Open draw, if she should get past Craybas.
