Maria defeated Caroline Wozniacki of Team Europe at the Hong Kong Tennis Classic in the final to give Team Russia the one point they needed for the win. Maria won 7-5 6-3 in 1 hour and 37 minutes.
In the 1st set that lasted 56 minutes, Wozniacki took a 5-3 lead but Maria saved 2 set-points as she came back to take the next 4 games to take the set 7-5.
Maria took a 4-1 lead in the 2nd set, Wozniacki broke Maria as she took the next 2 games but Maria rebounded to break Wozniacki again and take the next 2 games to seal the win.
Earlier on in the day Yevgeny Kafelnikov gave Team Russia their first point as he defeated Stefan Edberg of Team Europe 7-6 6-4.
