Maria scored an impressive 6-4 7-5 win over Jie Zheng of China in the 1st round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.
At 4-4 in the first set Maria broke Zheng's serve to love. Maria then held her serve to 15 to take the set 6-4 in 39 minutes.
Maria broke Zheng to lead 3-2 in the second set. Zheng came back to take the next 2 games to lead 4-3, then the set swung in Maria's direction as she took 3 straight games and had some matchpoints on her own serve but let Zheng back into the set as she couldn't convert them. At 5-5 Maria reeled off 2 straight games for the match.
In Thursday's 2nd round match, Maria will play Olga Govortsova of Belarus, Maria has never played Govortsova before.
