Maria is through to semis at the Celluar South Cup in Memphis after she defeated #8 seed Elena Baltacha of Great Britain 6-2 7-5 in 1 hour and 32 minutes.
Maria took the 1st set in 32 minutes with a loss of only 2 games. Maria's serve was one of the reasons why she took the set as she won every point when she got her 1st serve in and didn't face a break point on her own serve.
The second set was a lot closer. Baltacha took a 2-0 lead, Maria came back to get the set back on serve and broke to lead 4-3, and after a succession of breaks and Maria having matchpoints, Maria served for the set at 6-5 and took the match on her 3rd matchpoint.
In the semis to be played on Friday, Maria will play #5 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and they have never played before. This match is the 2nd match in the night session and the session begins at 19.00 local time (20.00 ET, 19.00 PT & 2.00 CET).
