Maria defeated Laura Robson of Great Britain 7-6 6-2 to advance to the third round of Wimbledon.
Robson acquitted herself well in the first set as she had a 4-1 lead, Maria worked her way back into the set as she levelled for 4-4. The next four games were holds of serve and a tie-break would decide the first set. Robson takes a mini break to lead 4-2 and then Maria reels of 5 straight points to take the tie-break 7-5 when Robson hits the ball into the net.
Maria immediately broke in the second set to lead 2-0 but Robson broke straight back to get the set back on serve. Maria then takes the next three games to lead 5-1 but drops the next two as Robson starts to make a mini-comeback but in the next game she holds her serve to take the match when Robson can't handle a first serve and hits it wide.
On Saturday, Maria will play Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic. They have played once before way back in 2003 at the Australian Open and Zakopalova won 6-4 7-6.
