Maria is through to the semis in Rome as No.3 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus had to retire with an elbow injury. The score was 4-6 3-0 when Azarenka retired.
Both players had trouble holding their serve at the beginning of the first set but Azarenka took control of the set as she led 5-2, Maria came back as she took the next two games but Azarenka won the final game to take the set 6-4.
Maria held her serve in the first game of the second set and had two breakpoints in the next game but at that point Azarenka hurt her elbow. Azarenka called for a medical time-out and tried to play on but the pain was too much and pulled out as Maria was up 3-0.
In Maria's third appearance in the semis here she will play top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark on Saturday. They have played four times before and the series is tied 2-2 - Maria won their only meeting on clay in Rome in 2008.
In the WTA rankings, Maria is provisionally No.8 with 4256 points.
