Despite spending most of her life living in the US and attaining the status of an international tennis star, Maria Sharapova has not forgotten her Russian roots, she has revealed in an interview.
The 24-year-old, who is among the players who will be entertaining tennis fans with Wimbledon tickets over the coming weeks, moved to America when she was young to pursue her career in the sport.
However, Sharapova said that she has always retained a deep "Russian feeling" and a passion for her homeland, according to the tournament's official website.
"There was a time when I was asked why I never chose to change citizenship. Deep down inside of me, I know where I'm born. I'm proud of my Siberian roots," she said.
"Apart from my parents, all my family live there. It's all about Russian culture. We speak Russian, eat Russian food. It is natural to me."
Sharapova is already into the second round of the Wimbledon Championships and could next face Laura Robson, if the young Brit manages to make it through her opening game against Angelique Kerber today (June 22nd).
