Maria Sharapova Seeking a Career Best Result at Wimbledon 2011

Maria Sharapova Seeking a Career Best Result at Wimbledon

June 19, 2011

Maria Sharapova may already be a Wimbledon champion; however the Russian star believes that winning a second SW19 crown would be the greatest achievement of her career.

The first apparent reason for Sharapova’s desire is her obvious competitive streak.

It is seven years ago since she dazzled the spectators on Centre Court as a 17 year-old wonderkid, on the way to triumphing in the final.

And Sharapova will feel that she should have added to her tally of Wimbledon wins by now.

Two further Grand Slam’s may have followed for the 24 year-old at the Australian and US Open in 2006 and 2008, however it would be fair to say that for all her talent, Sharapova could easily have won more silverware on the big stage by now.

After suffering a shoulder injury that put her out of the sport for ten months, it finally seems as if Maria is returning to her best – and ready to get back on the Grand Slam trail once more.

A prolonged period of hard work meant that Sharapova transformed herself from a self-described ‘cow on ice’ into a strong clay court player which she proved by reaching the semi-finals at the French Open earlier in the year.

And now, leading into the most prestigious event of them all on her favourite surface, Sharapova is set to be a force once again at the All England Club and a genuine title contender.

Sharapova believes a fourth Grand Slam title would be the most special for her, mainly due to her dedication and commitment on the back on her lengthy absence.

“I’ve basically started from zero and it’s a long process” said Sharapova.

“So if I do achieve another Grand Slam, I think it would be the biggest achievement of my career” she reflected.

The tenacity really came back at Roland Garros and Sharapova displayed the tiger-like qualities which helped her on her way to Wimbledon glory back in 04.

If she can keep up her game, she has to be in with a shout of regaining the title this year – and you can be sure that many of the world’s elite will be looking to avoid her at all cost.

Sharapova is seeded fifth for the championship and takes on fellow compatriot Anna Chakvetadze in the first round.
