The two top players in the Women’s tennis Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are looking huge favorite to the US Open championship this year.
The 24-year-old Sharapova’s has been playing well over the last couple of months, where she won the championship at Rome Masters and reached semi final at Roland Garros. She also entered into the final at Wimbledon 2011 tournament, where lost to No. 8 seed Petra Kvitova in straight sets with a 3–6 and 4–6. Sharapova has climbed to her season’s best rank in the WTA Rankings to No. 5 spot.
The World No. 5 ranked Sharapova has entered into her first major tournament final, since winning the 2008 Australian Open, as she had won the US Open in 2008, defeating former No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne with a 6-4 and 6-4. The 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is also one of the hot favorite to lift US Open, which it is going to be start on last week of August.
Serena has been return back into tennis, after one year lay-off. She suffered a foot injury and blood clot in lungs on last year, after winning the Wimbledon title. She made her first appearance in this season on the WTA tour in almost a year at the 2011 AEGON International, in Eastbourne. Serena also played 2011 Wimbledon tournament, but lost to Marion Bartoli with a 3–6 and 6–7 in the fourth round. Serena will be looking for the 14 Grand Slam at US Open.
