Maria Sharapova defeated top ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals of the Italian Open on Saturday. She followed that up with a straight sets victory over Sam Stosur in what is being described as the biggest clay court title of her career.
She also, unfortunately, took a rather nasty tumble during her match with Wozniacki. But in typical Sharapova fashion, even the fall itself was, uh, quite sexy (so is the grunting for what it’s worth).
Lost in all of that was a pretty remarkable forehand winner by Wozniacki. Given her propensity in forcing others to make mistakes, going up against an aggressive Sharapova on clay was probably something she looked forward to. But again, as has been the story with Wozniacki for a few years now, her inability to consistently beat top ten players caught up with her. She’ll have to regroup if she has any hopes of winning the French Open.
