Russian superstar Maria Sharapova survived a see-saw struggle to beat Agnieszka Radwanska and entered the semifinals of the second major of the season in Paris.
Winner of all the other three Grand Slam events, Maria Sharapova closed on a title triumph at Roland Garros today when she beat a spirited Pole Agnieszka Radwanska to enter the quarterfinals of the 2011 French Open, being played here in Paris, France.
Sharapova opened the match on a bad note and lost her serve in the second game to trail the first set 4-1. However, with a fine recovery, she pushed the matter into a decisive tie-break where she reigned supreme to get the opening set lead.
The second set opened on a favourable note for Sharapova who broke Radwanska's serve in the second game to lead the match formidably. However, Radwanska then raised the level of her game to first get the break back and then win Sharapova's service game with her fine returns of serve to lead the set 5-3. Sharapova then reeled off four games in a row to complete the 7-6(4), 7-5 win in exactly two hours of play.
Earlier today, Na Li became the first Chinese woman to enter the quarterfinals of the French Open as she battled past Czech Petra Kvitova 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in a one hour and 44 minutes of play.
Li was later joined by Belarusian Victoria Azarenka who breezed past Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-3 to set up a Quarterfinal clash with the Chinese star.
