Maria Sharapova has made the comeback women’s tennis was so badly hoping for.
And the Queen of Scream could even win the French Open, the one title missing from her collection of major championships.
The 24-year-old Russian took the Italian Open last Sunday, and on a surface she has never been comfortable with. But since getting engaged and being totally content in her private life, Sharapova has redefined her career.
Her remarkable return after career-threatening surgery on her shoulder has given a massive boost to a women’s game which is lamenting the absence of the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena.
Sharapova said: “To me all this is a new journey.”
“The game has changed and become more physical. You can no longer rely on what you had in the past and just have to be better now. That is my goal.”
“It would be wonderful to win the title in Paris. I hope I will be able to lift the trophy.”
It will be, though, a big challenge to win – and I accept that.”
Sharapova, who won Wimbledon in 2004 and has also won the Australian and US Open titles, is engaged to basketball star Sasha Vujacic.
Now she is back after two injury-plagued years and a spokesman for the women’s tour said: “It’s great news. She has always been so popular and it is even better now that she is in winning form again.”
