WIMBLEDON, England — The Nets’ failure to make the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season was not all bad. It allowed Maria Sharapova to be reunited with her fiancé, Sasha Vujacic, a New Jersey guard, who traveled with her to the French Open and Wimbledon.
The couple met when Vujacic was playing in Los Angeles with the Lakers, whose N.B.A. title runs consumed his previous two springs.
“Yeah, it’s been really nice,” Sharapova said Saturday after advancing to the fourth round at the All England Club with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Czech Republic’s Klara Zakopalova. “Because when he moved to Jersey, we didn’t get to see each other that much. This trip has kind of made up for it.”
Vujacic, of Slovenia, proposed to Sharapova last October, on the first anniversary of their first date.
“You get to know a lot about the person by being with them every single day, which we hadn’t really had in our whole relationship,” Sharapova said. “So it’s been really nice. We both enjoyed it. But we’ve obviously been at tournaments. It’s been very hard. We’re competitive, so we’re doing everything in order for me to win tennis matches.”
Sharapova, who won the singles title here in 2004 at age 17, struggled with her serve Saturday, producing as many double faults as aces (four). She finished with 20 winners and 21 unforced errors.
