Maria Sharapova will be hoping to keep Russia's Fed Cup hopes alive against Alize Cornet on Sunday.
Saturday's action saw the rankings and form-book turned upside down as France stunned the highly fancied Russians by taking both singles rubbers.
Sharapova's return to Fed Cup action for the first time in three years had attracted much media attention but it proved to be an anticlimax as the struggling Russian subsided meekly against Virginie Razzano. Sharapova had enjoyed a straightforward win over Razzano at the Australian Open just weeks before but her game malfunctioned as she went down 6-3, 6-4.
"I was giving her far too many free points, I wasn't serving well, and I wasn't really being aggressive on the court and I was giving her the opportunity to hit the first ball, and I think the court really suited her today," she said.
She will need to raise her game against the talented Cornet who enjoyed a three set win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.
However Sharapova believes there is still a chance for Russia to pull off an unlikely victory.
"We are going to go out and fight. We never give up and that's not what our country is known for, and we are going to go out there and battle for what is ours," she insisted.
