Former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova of Russia will take on Anabel Medinagarrigues of Spain in the second-round of the 2011 BNP Paribas Open. The Russian is coming back from an injury and must be ravenous to earn her first title of the new season.
Maria Sharapova made a fine start to the new season by reaching the quarterfinal at Auckland and also made it to the 4th round at Australian Open, where she was stunned by 30th seed Petkovic. Afterwards, Sharapova could not play in any of the tournaments due to viral illness. Undoubtedly, Sharapova is considered as one of the most talented players on tour. Well the Russian needs to clinch one or two titles to get back to her typical crushing form.
On the other hand, World No. 77 Anabel Medinagarrigues of Spain has been chasing her 10th WTA title. Anabel has been on a poor run in the new season so far, as she fell in the opening round at Auckland and Australian Open. Though, this Spanish contender made it to the semi-final at Acapulco, she could not achieve anything significant in this season. Thus, it is the right time for her to make some amendments for the past mistakes.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two contenders and Sharapova leads the head-to-head record with a 3-0 winning record. Last time they met in 2010 in Strasbourg, where Sharapova beat Medinagarrigues with a 4-6 6-2 6-2 scoreline.
