French Open 2011: Maria Sharapova vs Caroline Garcia Match Preview

May 26, 2011

Current World No. 7 Maria Sharpova got on to act from where she left in Rome and made a strong start to her title campaign at the 2011 French Open with a straight sets win over Croatian and former Wimbledon semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic on Tuesday.

Now, the Russian will take on seventeen-year old French qualifier Caroline Garcia to secure her berth in the last 32 of the French Open 2011. Well, the French teen sensation is ranked 188th in the WTA Rankings. After performing well at the ITF circuit, Garcia earned a wild-card entry to Aussie Open, earlier this year in January and beat Varvara Lepchenko in the first round in her maiden appearance in the main draw of a WTA tournament. Though, she lost to Ayumi Morita in the second round, the Frenchwoman certainly left an impression. Surprisingly, Garcia made a strong start to the 2011 French Open, as she dispatched her Czech opponent Zuzana Ondraskova in the first round match at the Roland Garros in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.

On the other hand, Maria Sharapova had to suffer setbacks in her flourishing career due to recurring injuries. She is coming off from a fresh title victory at WTA event in Rome; the Russian must be feeling highly confident after her successful run in the recent times. In fact, Sharapvoa has improved a lot from last season and rebounded nicely into Top 10 of the world. The Russian can complete her career slam by winning the French Open this year.

After her consistent performances of late, Sharapova has emerged as one of the favourites to win the French Open title along with top-seed Wozniacki, Aussie Open winner Kim Clijsters and rising star Julia Goerges. Last year, Sharapova reached the third round of the French Open. Well, she has climbed one position in her WTA Rankings last week after beating Samantha Stosur in the Rome final.

This will be the first-meeting between Sharapova and Caroline Garcia. The Frenchwoman has a 10-6 win-loss record this year and she can certainly test the Russian – provided she will get her act together. Obviously, Sharapova has oodles of experience and she is a crushing favourite to win this duel.
