Maria Sharapova looks more dangerous than ever at Wimbledon as Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Caroline Wozniacki all fell on Day 7.
Maria Sharapova, Russia's top player on tour, continued to play with authority at Wimbledon on Monday as she defeated Shuai Peng in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. The former champion has been tipped as a contender since the start of Wimbledon following her excellent run at the French Open and now, more than ever, she certainly appears to have a good chance of making the final.
Serena Williams and Venus Williams, two players that have won a combined nine Wimbledon titles, were both eliminated on Monday and so was the current world number one Caroline Wozniacki. With this in mind, Sharapova will surely be eager to make the most of what seems to be a real opportunity and the Russian will next face Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in the quarter-finals.
Cibulkova, the player who eliminated Wozniacki, is showing great determination at the All England Club and both players promise to provide a highly competitive match. Cibulkova has won her last two matches against Sharapova and the Slovak cannot be overlooked as a title contender herself.
The match, which is scheduled for Centre Court on Tuesday (15:00 London time), looks as though it will pit Sharapova's superior height and power against Cibulkova's superior foot-speed.
The two will take to Centre Court following the Sabine Lisicki vs Marion Bartoli match, a match scheduled to start at 13:00 (London).
