Consistently improving to redeem her position in the world of tennis, former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova will take on the Australian No. 1 Samantha Stosur in the pre-quarterfinal of the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open to secure her berth in the quarterfinal of the tournament. Amidst current state-of-affairs, both contenders need victory in order to boost up their confidence and we can expect a cracking contest.
After an ordinary last season, former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova of Russia has been on a resurgence mode and looking more determined and focussed this time to move up in the rankings – as soon as possible. After winning the first three battles, Sharapova is up against the World No. 5 Samantha Stosur in the pre-quarterfinal of the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open, a WTA Premier Event, being played here at Miami, USA.
In her last duel, Stosur played fantastically to outclass Lucie Safarova in straight sets with a 6-0 7-6 scoreline. On the other hand, Sharapova has moved quickly to 13th in WTA Rankings after her ordinary last year. In her last round match, the Russian made quick work of German wildcard Sabine Lisicki to come this far in the tournament.
When quizzed about this duel, Sharapova said, "I have to put the previous encounters behind, take a few things that worked well for me and try to use them again, but also know that we did play a while ago."
This will be the seventh meeting between the two and Stosur has not won a single match against the Russian, as Sharapova apparently leads the head-to-head record with a 6-0. Last time, they played each other in 2009 in Tokyo, where Sharapova outmuscled the Australian in straight sets with a 6-0 6-1 scoreline.
