Former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova of Russia has an apparent 4-0 record against World No. 14 Shahar Peer of Israel. Well, the Russian can hope for another easy victory against Peer, who has been struggling to find some form, of late.
When last time they met, World No. 8 Maria Sharpova completely outplayed Shahar Peer in all departments of the game and earned a straight sets victory in the opening round of the Fed Cup in 2008. It has been three years since the Russian last defeated Peer and things have changed a lot over a period of time. Now this Israeli contender is looking ready to give some hard-time to the Russian. Both will take on each other to secure their berth in the quarterfinal of the 2011 International BNL dItalia, a WTA Premier Event being played here in Rome, Italy.
Sharapova is one of the strongest contenders, who has been touted to clinch the title this week and the Russian is always known as a fierce competitor on court. Entering this match, the Russian certainly has a mental edge over Peer, as she leads the head to head with a 4-0. Peer has made it to the quarterfinals at Dubai and Indian Wells, earlier this year. And, she has been coming off from a poor showing at Madrid, where she was ousted in the opening round.
On the other hand, Sharapova has made it to the semi-final at Indian Wells and also reached the third-round at Madrid. The interesting thing about the Russian is that she easily dominates the proceedings until challenged by someone. Hence, it is a good opportunity for Peer to settle a few past scores with the Russian.
