Maria won a tough match against Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the 1st round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati. Maria won 6-4 1-6 6-2 in 2 hours and 12 minutes.
The first set was a close affair as both players managed to hold their serves until Maria broke to lead 5-4 and then held her serve to take the set 6-4 in 48 minutes.
Kuznetsova took control of the second set by breaking Maria in the 2nd game and ran away with the set 6-1.
After a 10 minute break because of the heat, Maria came out firing in the third set as she broke early in the 2nd game and throughout the set kept her nose in front as she then broke Kuznetsova in the final game.
In Wednesday's 2nd round match, Maria will play Andrea Petkovic of Germany, Maria has never played the German before. This match will be on the 3rd match on Centre Court and the schedule of play begins at 11.00ET.
