June 03, 2009 Maria's 2009 Roland Garros campaign has come to an end in the quarters today at the hands of #20 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. Maria lost 0-6 2-6 in 1 hour and 15 minutes.
This was Maria's first loss to the Slovakian after winning the previous 2 matches on clay. Maria faced a very determined player who feels right at home on clay.
Maria was unable to take a game in the first set as she lost it in 30 minutes and Cibulkova took the set when she hit a powerful forehand winner.
In the 2nd set, Cibulkova raced to a 5-0 lead, Maria started to get back in the set as she took the next 2 games but Cibulkova had too big a lead and took the set and match on her 5th matchpoint.
In Maria's comeback from a shoulder injury, she played 8 matches on clay and won 6 of them and she will now head to the grasscourts of Birmingham to play the AEGON Classic which begins on Monday.
