Maria played and won her first Grand Slam match in nearly a year today at Roland Garros in Paris. Maria defeated Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus 3-6 6-1 6-2 in 1 hour and 59 minutes.
Maria came from 0-2 in the 1st set to lead 3-2 but then Yakimova broke Maria's serve to level the set 3-3 and reeled off the next 3 games to take the set 3-6 in 45 minutes.
In the 2nd set, Maria started to take control of the match as she raced into a 4-0 lead, Yakimova then broke Maria's serve and had treatment for a back injury. After the injury time-out for Yakimova, Maria took the next 2 games to take the set. Maria took the set 6-1 in 38 minutes.
The 3rd set started with a break for Maria and she built on that to take a 4-1 lead and then took 2 of the 3 games to advance to the 2nd round.
Maria's 2nd round opponent will be #11 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia. Petrova will be the highest ranked player that Maria has played in her comeback. They have played 6 times before and Maria leads the series 5-1. Maria won the last match in Linz at the end of 2006, they have never played on clay.
