Maria won her comeback match in Warsaw today as she defeated Tathiana Garbin of Italy in the 1st round. Maria won 6-1 6-7 6-3 in 2 hours and 35 minutes to win her 1st match since August on her 9th matchpoint.
First set: 6-1 in 40 minutes
After a long 8 minute first game where Maria broke Garbin's serve, Maria then held her own service to lead 2-0. Maria only dropped one game in this set when Garbin broke at 3-1. Maria won the set when Garbin hit a volley out.
Second set: 6-7 in 1 hour and 13 minutesMaria raced into a 4-0 lead but Garbin manged to claw back some of the lead by taking the next 2 games. Maria then took the next game to lead 5-2. Maria was serving for the match at 5-3 and had 4 matchpoints but was unable to convert and Garbin got herself back into the set as she was able to take the next game to level the set 5-5. The next 2 games were hold of serve and the set was decided by a tie-break which Garbin won 8-6 after Maria held another 2 matchpoints.
Third set: 6-3 in 42 minutes Garbin took a 3-1 lead in the 3rd set but Maria came storming back to take the next 6 games to take the match. Maria won the match when a shot from Garbin floated long.
Following Caroline Wozniacki's withdrawl through injury, Maria will play a qualifier in the 2nd round.
