| Maria Sharapova is Pretty Much the Real Deal |
 |
January 03, 2011
Our dinky tennis tournaments in Auckland are a last stand of sorts. World class names dribble down here for an Australian Open warm-up, even if they are no longer world beaters and on that long walk known as the comeback trail.
Maria Sharapova, the most infamous grunt machine in tennis, is the latest of these tennis visitors. The women's Classic starts today, and you couldn't miss Sharapova, the glamour puss winner of three Grand Slam titles, if you went anywhere near the media over the weekend. |

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova says being able to win a Grand Slam tournament this year would be the biggest feat of her career.
The headline act at this week's ASB Classic in Auckland, the 23-year-old Sharapova has three major titles to her name.
"Absolutely, I would love to," she said when asked about her hopes of adding to that collection during 2011.
"If I'm able to win a Grand Slam after my injury, it would be my greatest achievement in my career." |

Today the hype will stop and the action begin for Maria Sharapova at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
The tournament's drawcard will play Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro in the third match on centre court.
It's a tricky match and Suarez Navarro shouldn't be underestimated. The nuggety Spaniard is a fast mover around the court and likes to play long rallies to grind out the points.
Her biggest moments in the sun were at the Australian Open last year and the French Open the year before when she made it to the quarterfinals. In Melbourne, she defeated Venus Williams on her way to the last eight, but went down to Elena Dementieva 6-2 6-2 to miss out on a spot in the semis. |

Maria Sharapova believes she can again become a potent force in women's tennis and says her presence in Auckland is an indication of how seriously she is approaching that goal in 2011.
Sharapova said she could have bypassed Auckland for an exhibition event but decided she needed to change her approach to this year if she is to lift herself from her current ranking of 18th to the world No1 status she has held four times, the last time in May of 2008. |

 |
January 02, 2011
She's the most glamorous female tennis player to grace the courts since Anna Kournikova retired, but Russian beauty Maria Sharapova is hardly living the life of a superstar in Auckland.
She was prepared to miss the city's spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks display because she was in bed by 9.30pm, and a trip to the movies to see the critically-panned Little Fockers seems to have been the most exciting off-court action so far. |
