| Maria Sharapova in Hot Demand in Auckland |
 |
December 30, 2010
Maria Sharapova was in hot demand on Auckland's Viaduct Harbour this evening as tennis fans queued for her autograph.
Sharapova, along with Svetlana Kuznetsova and Yanina Wickmayer, put aside the risk of wrist injury ahead of next week's ASB Classic at the signing session.
About 200 fans - including a few news reporters - were seen queuing as they sought signatures on posters, shirts, tennis balls, mobile phones and even yo-yos.
Tournament officials were expecting some of the signed items to find their way onto popular trading websites in the next few days.
Many young girls were among those queuing, though second in line was 63-year-old Emily Poulsen from the North Shore. |

Maria Sharapova kept her lips zipped, while another former world No1, Dinara Safina, wasn't so shy as the big guns came out to play in Auckland yesterday.
After rain caused her to miss out on a hit at the ASB Classic venue on Tuesday, Sharapova made the most of the fine conditions by spending three hours training on centre court.
With her two coaches she practised between 11am and 1pm and then again for an hour from 4pm.
But although her preparations for the tournament have begun, Sharapova continued to give the silent treatment to the media and won't do any interviews until she's contractually obliged to on Saturday, two days out from the tournament opener. |

The pulling power of tennis superstar Maria Sharapova has seen ticket sales for next week's ASB Classic reach record levels.
The three-time Grand Slam winning tennis player and part-time model is the tournament's biggest name ever and has sent Aucklanders racing to the ticket booths.
Tournament director Richard Palmer says ticket sales are at an all time high even compared to the years when Anna Kournikova and Lindsay Davenport competed. |

Glamorous tennis star Maria Sharapova arrived in Auckland this morning for the ASB Classic - minus her fiance, New Jersey Mets guard Sasha Vujacic.
The world's highest-paid female athlete, who Forbes magazine estimated earned US$22 million ($29.2 million) in endorsements last year, flew into Auckland on Flight NZ5 from Los Angeles, entering arrivals about 8.40am.
A tournament spokesman said last night that Sharapova, 23, and other competitors would be hoping for better weather today so they can get out on the court at the ASB Tennis Centre, where they begin competing in qualifying rounds from Saturday. |

Maria Sharapova's arrival in New Zealand yesterday for the ASB Classic drew plenty of media attention, but for now, the most photographed sportswoman in the world was keeping her powder dry, declining to do any interviews.
That powder was probably the only thing dry in Auckland yesterday though as heavy rain fell for most of the afternoon, forcing the cancellation of her planned hit out at the tennis centre.
It means that she won't see the refurbished stadium until today and maybe then she'll talk to the media.
Also missing out on a hit at ASB Tennis Centre yesterday was New Zealand's Marina Erakovic. |
