| Women's U.S. Open 2010 Is Wide Open |
 |
August 28, 2010
With Serena Williams out the women's U.S. Open is more open than ever. There are probably 10 or so players that have a legitimate shot at winning it. Two of the popular picks are players seeded 10 and 14 - Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova. Caroline Wozniacki has won three tournaments this summer, and she is seeded No. 1. Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams are seeded second and third and are always threats to win any slam they are in. I think it's going to be a fun, unpredictable tournament, but here are my predictions anyway.

| Ace! Maria Sharapova for Cole Haan - Interview by Gillian Mohney |
 |
| August 27, 2010 |
|
From tennis whites to Andre Agassi's mullet to Anna Wintour giving Roger Federer personal tips, fashion and tennis go hand-in-racket. And with all this talk about shapely models, it's time for the healthy representation of taller-than-runway girls! At 6'2," tennis and fashion icon Maria Sharapova is releasing an accessories collaboration with Cole Haan, which includes leopard ballet flats and slouchy bags. The line is wearable and versatile—even the four inch heels have Nike technology to sprint across Manhattan comfortably. We caught up with Sharapova last night at the Cole Haan line's opening party—hosted by the tennis star, interiors photographer Todd Selby, and Interview's Christopher Bollen—where she (in those four-inch heels) gave us advice on her favorite trends, and how to take a compliment. |
| Gillian Mohney |
Why did you decide to work with Cole Haan on this line? |
| Maria Sharapova |
We wanted to create something that was really inspired by my lifestyle. I want to represent women on all different levels from young girls to someone who works in the office or an athlete like me...
I want my handbags and my shoes to be stylish but I want to make sure that they're versatile. I travel and I have to make sure the pieces I put into my bag can go with a dress or with shorts or jeans. |
| Gillian Mohney |
With fall coming up, do you have any favorite trends for the season? |
| Maria Sharapova |
My worst favorite [trend] is the clogs! [Laughs] But I'm really loving the wide legged trousers since I'm a tall girl. I've been wearing them constantly. Maybe I'll be in style now. |

| Maria Sharapova & Cole Haan Fall 2010 Collaboration - Interview by Mihal Freinquel |
 |
| August 27, 2010 |
|
Last night Cole Haan and Interview Magazine hosted a party to celebrate the launch of tennis star Maria Sharapova's Fall 2010 collection. This is the third collection she has designed for Cole Haan and the soiree did more than salute it. Set in the posh Sky Room at the New Museum, DJ Lindsey killed it on the one's and two's, Todd Selby circulated as his signed prints waited patiently to be auctioned off for charity, and the who's who of industry insiders ate delicate hors d'oeuvres and delighted in the flawless view of the New York City skyline.
Not only did I get to meet photographer Todd Selby and Dan Ragone (top dog at Interview Magazine) -- and not only did I get to chat with Cole Haan CEO Dave McTague (one of the most humble and fascinating people I've met in this industry) -- but I also got to interview the tallest, hottest, sweetest, blondest Russian tennis player out there: Maria Sharapova. |
| Mihal Freinquel |
How would you describe your personal style off the court? |
| Maria Sharapova |
My lifestyle is really hectic. I travel a lot, I'm always running around to meetings, a press conference, a meal after practice -- so all of the pieces in my wardrobe are really representative of that crazy lifestyle.
If it's a dress I want to make sure that it's versatile enough to either wear with boots or heels, or with a jacket over it or tights under it. I also like to accessorize so I can get more out of a casual outfit. |
| Mihal Freinquel |
In your collection with Cole Haan this season you have a pretty solid mix of heels and flats. Are you a heels or flats girl yourself? |
| Maria Sharapova |
I'm a flats girl, I live in ballerinas. When I started working with Cole Haan I knew I wanted a really solid, comfortable ballet flat. We came up with the silhouette and began with only three colors. They became so popular that now for fall, a few years later, we have about ten or twelve colors -- it's really exciting. |
