Maria Sharapova to play BNP Paribas Showdown

A huge night of tennis is in store for New York area tennis fans, with some of the world's top players scheduled for the first tennis matches in the transformed Madison Square Garden on Monday, March 5th, 2012, as the BNP Paribas Showdown returns for its fifth year at the World's Most Famous Arena.  The night starts with Maria against Caroline Wozniacki followed by Roger Federer against Andy Roddick.  Both matches will be best of three sets.


"Playing in Madison Square Garden has always been a dream of mine," said Maria.  "Everyone wants to play there at least once in their career. I look forward to coming back to New York for the Showdown."

The former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova has knocks out of the 2011 US Open tournament by the Italian Flavia Pennetta in straight sets in the third round.


The 24-year-old Maria Sharapova has been seeded number 3 at the US Open, but failed to win the championship title for the second time. The Russian star Sharapova, who has entered into 2011 US Open event with high hopes, after winning the 2011 Cincinnati Masters two weeks ago. Sharapova has won her last Grand Slam title at Australian Open in 2008, where she has crushed Ana Ivanovic in straight sets with a 7–5 and 6–3.
