Maria defeated Venus Williams of the United States 6-3 6-4 in 1 hour and 23 minutes to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Thailand's beach resort city of Hua Hin in her first match of 2010.
After the match, Maria said: “It’s good to be back and I was glad to play against Venus in my first match of the year. I still remember when I first came to Thailand before. I was still young and had a great match with Venus. I will start practice now and use this beautiful hot weather to prepare for the Australian Open. I grew up in Florida. It's warm and humid there so here it's okay for me. They make you feel like you are a part of them and a part of the culture. I love the food like khao (rice) and different spices.” |

Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams said they are looking forward to today's exhibition match in Hua Hin after touching down at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday.
The 20 million baht event marks Hua Hin's 100th anniversary and will be played at the Centennial Park.
Action starts at 2pm and will be televised live on Channel 3. |

BANGKOK, 1 January 2010 (NNT) - Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams have arrivedd at Suvarnabhumi Airport this morning in preparation for the tennis match “Hua Hin Centennial Invitation” tomorrow.
Top women's tennis players, Maria Sharapova from Russia and Venus Williams from the United States, this morning arrivedd in Bangkok from Los Angeles and continued to Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Both are scheduled to play in the Hua Hin Centennial Invitation tournament which is organized to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Hua Hin district. |
