The draw for the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, Italy has been released and Maria is seeded No.7 and has a bye in the first round. In the second round, Maria will play either Ekaterina Makarova of Russia or last year's champion Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain. Maria has never played Martinez Sanchez before and played Makarova once before in Madrid last week and won in three sets.
The first seed Maria can meet is No.10 seed Shahar Peer of Israel in the third round and is seeded to meet No.3 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the quarters.

Last year Maria didn't play this event and has played here three times before and her best result was reaching the semis in 2005 and 2008.
