While she may only be ranked 169 in the world ranking, American Serena Williams dominated second-seeded Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-3 in the Stanford quarterfinals. The one-sided affair lasted only 69 minutes.
Following the match, Williams discussed her dedication to fitness, saying, “I had to do something different, like actually warm up. I was really disappointed at Wimbledon...it’s time to get serious not only at the Slams but at every other tournament as well.”
Williams also remarked, “I think I started out fast and that really helped me. I gotta get rid of that slow-start nonsense so that was really good.”
Sharapova now holds a 2-7 record against the American. Analyzing the match, she stated, “She was serving and returning quite powerfully, and I felt I was extremely late. I didn't have my timing today at all.”
Next up for Williams in the semifinals is German Sabine Lisicki. Marion Bartoli of France and Dominika Cibulkova are the other remaining ladies in the draw.
