Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova was all smiles as she greeted throngs of screaming Taiwanese fans upon her arrival at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday.
Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, the world No. 2 signed autographs for Taiwanese fans who got up early to welcome her on her first-ever trip to Taiwan for an exhibition match.
Asked what she was bringing to Taiwan as a gift, Sharapova said she brought her tennis rackets and skills to thank local fans.
Sharapova will play an exhibition match against world No. 4 Vera Zvonareva at Taipei Arena on Thursday. Zvonareva arrived in Taipei Tuesday night.
Both are visiting Taiwan for the first time. They will meet the media Wednesday afternoon.
Sharapova has won 24 WTA singles titles, including three Grand Slam singles titles at the 2004 Wimbledon, 2006 US Open and 2008 Australian Open. She has also won the year-end invitational WTA Tour Championships in 2004. (By Pien Chin-feng and Sofia Wu) enditem/ls
