Maria Sharapova, the Russian professional tennis player and a former World No. 1. player, who has won 24 WTA singles titles, including 3 Grand Slam singles titles, she has as well won the year-end invitational WTA Tour Championships in 2004.
Russian Maria Sharapova the current World No. 2 player has qualified for the TEB-BNP Paribas WTA Championships that will be hosted at the state of the art Sinan Erdem Arena in Istanbul, Turkey.
According to the official reports, the WTA’s year-end finale, will be held in Istanbul through 2013, and will feature the Top 8 singles players and Top 4 doubles teams challenging for the coveted title and a prize money of $5 million.
The Russian star Sharapova has been in 5 Grand Slam finals and luckily will be playing the event for the initial time since 2007. As she was qualified for the TEB-BNP Paribas WTA Championships, she says that she is so happy to have booked her spot in Istanbul and further says that I haven’t been to the event since 2007 and I have actually missed contending in one of the most thrilling and significant events of the year. I’m looking forward to making the most of playing in Istanbul.
Sharapova has played this event 4 times before from 2004-2007 and her best result was winning it in 2004 in Los Angeles. Sharapova made her professional breakthrough in 2004; she upset two-time defending champion and top seed Serena Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final for her first Grand Slam singles title.
