Maria Sharapova Takes a Shot at Andrea Petkovic After Defeating Her at Key Biscayne
After her quarterfinals victory against Serbia's Jelena Jankovic at Key Biscayne, Germany's Andrea Petkovic decided to do a little dance on the court which has become known as the Petko Dance.
And after Maria Sharapova defeated Petkovic on the semifinals on Thursday, she decided to do a little dance of her own.
A dance with words, that is.
When told Petkovic thought she would be tired in the third set after her long match the previous day, Sharapova responded, via Yahoo! Sports, "Because I didn't do the dance after. I wasn't tired."
And when told Petkovic admired her, Sharapova still didn't hold back, talking about how she put the fleet-footed German away:
"More than anything, I sensed that she was tired-probably a lot of the dancing that she's been doing- and I took advantage of it."
Sharapova could have been saying this tongue-in-cheek, joking if you will, but something tells me she didn't admire Petkovic for the way she danced about after sending Jankovic packing.
The Petkco Dance can be seen as cute, as livening up the game, as darling, but to some people this could have been seen as showboating, for looking for attention, for flaunting after a victory.
I'm guessing the 10-year veteran didn't find Petkovic's dance cute or amusing, and that she unleashed on her on Thursday because of it, both on the court and after the match.
There's a respect for the sport that some of the veterans of the game take very seriously, and there's nothing as infuriating for some as seeing someone disrespect the game's integrity.
For the record, I found it cute, but I'm also a guy in his 20s and hadn't just lost a match to the German in frustrating fashion.
I could see it rubbing some players the wrong way.
Maybe Petkovic and Sharapova need to do the Waltz together or something to ease the tension.
As long as Petkovic doesn't do the Petko Dance afterwards.
