Former World No.1 Maria Sharapova takes on Britain's Heather Watson to kick start her title campaign at the 2011 US Open, season's last Grand Slam, being played here at Flushing Meadows, New York.
Sharapova is enjoying an incredibly successful season with a Grand Slam final and two premier level titles in Rome and Cincinnati. Seeded third at this year's event, Sharapova is playing great tennis at the moment, and has a title from the last fortnight she captured on American soil in Cincinnati. Sharapova's semifinal run in French Open also helped her strengthen her position in the top 10 and with a runner up finish at Wimbledon, the Russian announced her return to the elite in women's tennis.
Sharapova's opponent, Heather Watson is just 19 years of age and has several confidence boosting wins to her credit this season. Currently ranked a low No.104 in the world, Watson has no singles titles to her credit and her best came in Memphis and Auckland where she reached the quarterfinals to improve her ranking in the beginning of the year.
This is a first meeting between both players and even though it carries a little bit of surprise element to it, Sharapova is likely to seal the deal in straight sets.
