Maria Sharapova takes on Julia Goerges tonight at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
Sharapova has had her most successful season in a long while this year and entered this year’s Toray Pan Pacific Open as the second seed.
She got off to a good start this week by beating Tamarine Tanasugarn in straight sets (6-2 7-5) and will be aiming to use this solid win as the starting point for a title challenge.
That said, she has a tricky third round clash ahead of her as the Russian meets thirteenth seed Julia Goerges tonight in a match that is sure to draw a big crowd.
Goerges earned the right to take on Sharapova by achieving back to back straight set wins against Pauline Parmentier (6-3 6-4) and Greta Arn (6-2 6-1).
Goerges lost both of her previous contests against Sharapova, but it’s worth noting that the most recent meeting between the pairing was a close fought three setter, with Sharapova winning 4-6 6-4 6-4 at the Australian Open at the start of the year.
This could go to a third set and may well prove to be an exciting tie.
Prediction: Sharapova in three.
