Maria Sharapova On Her Way Up The World Rankings
After competing in the Sony Ericsson Open finals twice in her career, the No. 13 ranked Sharapova has yet to win one.
While her finals foe, No. 8 ranked Victoria Azarenka, won last year's tournament.
What would winning the Sony Ericsson finals mean to her?
“It would mean a lot, Sharapova told the Miami Herald. Its the biggest tournament after the Grand Slams. Like I said, Im pretty fortunate to be in the finals after having a few tough ones like I had the previous rounds.
“Yeah, I look forward to going out there and getting it done.
That's putting it lightly.
Win or lose, Sharapova is headed back to the Top 10 in world rankings.
By winning this tournament in Miami, Sharapova will earn her first tournament win in almost a year, putting her on an upward path this season.
Sharapova could use the confidence since she has lost her last three finals. With the French Open coming in May, any kind of positive step she takes in this tournament could ultimately help her case to become a top seed in that upcoming major.
More importantly, the momentum that should build upon with a potential Sony Ericsson win just may fuel a strong French Open performance that could finally earn her a career Grand Slam.
