Wimbledon 2011 Women's 4th Round - Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams

Wimbledon 2011 Women's 4th Round - Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams

June 25, 2011

Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, and Petra Kvitova are among the favorites into Wimbledon's final 16.

The women's field has been narrowed down at the All England Club as the field of 128 has been cut in half three times and now just 16 players remain.

There are high seeds missing from the field of 16 as both Na Li and Vera Zvonareva, the third and second seeds respectively, suffered early round losses with Sabine Lisicki eliminating Li and Tsvetana Pironkova eliminating Zvonareva.

Lisicki will face another unseeded player on Monday as she faces Petra Cetkovska while Pironkova, the 32nd seed, will face Venus Williams, the 23rd seed.

The top four favorites remaining in the tournament (Source: bet365) are Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, and Caroline Wozniacki.

Williams appears to have shaken off the rust that may have been present in the early rounds as she dismissed Maria Kirilenko without much trouble at all in the third round. Williams will now face Marion Bartoli in a match that should speak volumes about the American's title hopes.

Sharapova has a tricky opponent in the fourth round as she will face China's Shuai Peng. Peng has come on in recent months but the 20th seed has never won a 4th round match in a major. She'll look to break that slump but Sharapova may prove too tough.

Kvitova is totally looking dangerous and she does not have that bad of a draw all the way to the final. She plays 19th seeded Yanina Wickmayer next with a prospective quarterfinal against either Venus Williams or Tsvetana Pironkova.

Nadia Petrova is a player who has made some unexpected noise at Wimbledon 2011. She has fallen in the rankings in recent months but her fourth round appearance is resurgent especially since she went through Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Petrova is in tough in the fourth round against fourth seeded Victoria Azarenka but the Belarussian has thrown in her share of chokes in Grand Slams and that match looks as though it will be close.

The match involving the two lowest ranked players in Wimbledon 2011's fourth round will feature 80th ranked Tamira Paszek and 89th ranked Ksenia Pervak. Pervak is just 20 years old and she is oozing in talent while Paszek is just 20 as well. The latter player is far more experienced however as she made the Wimbledon fourth round and the US Open fourth round as a sixteen year old, a time when she actually looked like a possible phenom before subpar seasons ever since.

Caroline Wozniacki looks reasonably safe to advance although there are no locks any longer. She'll face Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round a player who has just two career wins in the fourth round of a Grand Slam draw, with neither of those wins from Wimbledon.

Wozniacki and Sharapova, should they both win their next matches, would showdown in the quarterfinals in a battle that would be between two prosective finalists.

Prediction final: Petra Kvitova vs Serena Williams.
